Understanding Root Canal Infections

Dr. David Montz and dental hygienist performing treatment on a patient at Montz & Maher Dental Group

Toothaches are fairly common and are caused by factors like:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Dental damage
  • Previous dental injuries
  • Sinus infections
  • Damaged fillings
  • Bruxism

These conditions can introduce bacteria into the inner chamber of your tooth, causing the dental pulp to become infected. This infection causes sharp pain, consistent toothaches, swollen gums, discolored gums, sensitivity to hot or cold, and other symptoms. Root canal therapy removes the infection, sterilizes the pulp chamber, and saves your tooth from extraction.

Save Your Tooth in a Single Appointment

Root canals include the following steps:

“I was told every single step prior to it occurred and offered compassion and comfort. I wound up needing 2 root canals and deep cleaning so I opted for IV sedation due to claustrophobia and fear. I cannot express my gratitude enough. It has changed my life and now I am not afraid to smile.” — Susan, 5-Star Review

Anesthesia

Your Pearland dentist will administer local anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout treatment. We also offer sedation options if you have dental anxiety.

Accessing the Tooth

Your dentist will remove any decayed or damaged enamel and make a small opening in your tooth. This opening will allow your dentist to access the inner chamber, where the infection resides.

Sterilization

Your dentist will remove the infected pulp, then sterilize the root canals before sealing the tooth.

Crown

Sometimes a crown is necessary to protect and reinforce the tooth after treatment. If you require a crown, we can often place it on the same day as your root canal therapy using our CEREC® technology.

Routine Checkups

Attending routine dental checkups will allow your dentist to catch problems in their earliest stages, helping to prevent more root canal infections and other problems.

Sedation Is Available

We understand that dental care causes feelings of anxiety for a lot of our Pearland patients. While our team uses advanced technology, spa-like amenities, and gentle treatment techniques to make appointments easier, sometimes patients just need something to calm their nerves.

We offer oral conscious sedation, a pill you can take before your appointment to help you feel relaxed, drowsy, and calm in the dental chair. You’ll still be able to respond to your dentist, and your memory of your procedure may be a bit hazy.

If you have a more extensive treatment or a higher level of dental fear, we can bring in an anesthesiologist to administer IV sedation and monitor you throughout your treatment.

Don’t Go Without Treatment

Treating a toothache as soon as possible is imperative to saving your tooth. If you go without root canal treatment, your condition will worsen, and you could lose the tooth permanently. A missing tooth will require a bridge or dental implant to replace it.

While we perform both of these procedures at our Pearland, Silverlake, and Friendswood offices, we highly recommend opting for a root canal procedure, as it’s a less invasive treatment and saves your natural tooth.
